Supreme Court will hear tomorrow pleas filed against the demolition drive in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri.

"Anti-encroachment drive has been stopped in Jahangirpuri area," says Special Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, Delhi Police.

North MCD mayor Raja Iqbal Singh on Tuesday called the plan to remove encroachments and illegal constructions as ‘routine work’ carried out against those in violation of building by-laws. “This is our normal routine work. Laywer mentions the matter urgently in the Delhi HC seeking to stop the demolition drive in Jahangirpuri. Says that the residents were not given prior intimation and several of them are not even at home. The counsel sought that the demolition drive be stopped till 2pm.

Most shops torn down by the earth movers in Jahangirphri were running as scrap godowns. It is from these godowns that the rioters had sourced bottles, which were used to attack police personnel on Saturday, sources said.

Officials say it will take them more than a day to demolish the structures and clear the debris from the shops.

The driver of the bulldozer being used for the ‘demolition drive’ tells ANI that “slums and shops built on roadside will be removed” in the area. An anti-encroachment drive is underway at the Jahangirpuri area of Delhi which witnessed violence on April 16 during a religious procession.

Delhi Police officers and those from anti-riot teams have taken position on the roof tops to ensure that they have a birds eye view of the area. Police are also using drones to record the events of Wednesday.

"We will provide security to the civic agency (NDMC) for the anti-encroachment drive. Adequate force is available. Focus is on law and order situation," Dependra Pathak, the Special Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) was quoted by ANI.

Heavy police deployment continues in Delhi's Jahangirpuri area, where stone-pelting incidents took place on April 16 during a religious procession.
