The municipal polls may appear less important than state or national elections but hold far more sway in the everyday life of an urban citizen. For Delhi’s residents, no agency holds more influence on their lives than MCD, which registers births, deaths, and marriages, clears garbage, oversees primary education, provides health care services, maintains colony roads, and runs crematoriums.
Delhi Cong chief claims unable to vote, name missing from electoral rolls
Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar Chaudhary said he could not cast his vote in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections on Sunday after finding out that his name was missing from the electoral rolls. “My name is neither on the voters' list nor on the deleted list. My wife has voted,” Kumar said at a polling booth in east Delhi's Dallupura.
The complaint submitted by the Delhi Congress alleged that Chaudhary's name was "intentionally" removed from the electoral roll, but not deleted which points towards foul play.
“The BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party have tried to destroy the democratic system of a citizen's right to vote and elect a democratic government,” he said.
Both AAP, BJP claim victory in MCD polls
The polls are crucial for the AAP and its leader Arvind Kejriwal as they seek expansion of the party ahead of 2024 general elections in the country. A victory in the MCD polls will not only cement AAP's place in Delhi but will fuel its aspiration to emerge as a serious contender to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the national scene.
The BJP, which had deployed its top leaders, including national president JP Nadda, 19 Union ministers like Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal and chief ministers of six states in the campaign, is also seeking redemption through a morale-boosting victory.
The party received a drubbing at the hands of AAP in the 2020 Delhi Assembly polls and won just eight of the 70 seats.
Nearly 50% voter turnout recorded till 5:30 pm across 250 wards
Following the 2017 MCD election trend in voter turnout, this time as well a lower turnout of nearly 50% polling was registered till 5:30 pm, ANI reported.

MCD officials often come and dig up the roads around without even thinking about the issues faced by residents because of this," 86-year-old voter Shanti Devi alleges speaking to PTI.

People in North-East Delhi and several other areas complained that their names were not mentioned in the voters' lists. Anil Kumar, the Delhi Congress president, was among those who could not vote after their name was missing from the list, PTI reported.
