Quoting the Justice Shravan Shankar Jha commission report, the party claimed that the funds meant for relief and rehabilitation of more than 40,000 families affected by the Sardar Sarovar project had been misappropriated.

The Jha commission was constituted by the Madhya Pradesh high court to inquire about fake land registries and other issues related to the oustees of the Sardar Sarovar dam project.

Set up about eight years ago, the Congress said the commission’s report could not be made public as the state government appealed in the high court to stop its publication. “Ultimately under the Supreme Court orders, it has been placed on the floor of the house,” the opposition party claimed.

“BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh is achieving new milestones in corruption. Vyapam, which involved multi-state deaths and corruption, was bad enough but today we have the Sardar Sarovar scam,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

He claimed that the Jha commission has found “rampant forgeries” and “large-scale irregularities” in the distribution of money earmarked for the relief and rehabilitation of people displaced in the Narmada Sardar Sarovar area.

“In thousands of cases, the report found that forged documents have become the basis of the distribution of money,” Singhvi said.

“Again I am sure you will have resistance, you will have denial, you will have justification, but true face of this absolutely scam-ridden corrupt government is before us all yet again,” he said.

Singhvi also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. “Every day, we only hear homilies from the Prime Minister about clean governance and the anti-corruption crusade. This is an example of the belied anti-corruption crusade while we have a scam ridden government in front of us,” he said.
