Angry Indian Goddesses trailer: Love, lust, faith and dreams collide

Pan Nalin returns with his new film Angry Indian Goddesses starring Rajshri Deshpande, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Sarah-Jane Dias, Sandhya Mridul, Amrit Maghera, Anushka Manchanda and Pavleen Gujral. Here is the fantastic first trailer.

Acclaimed director Pan Nalin (Samsara) returns with his new film, a seemingly wild tale of a group of women let loose in Goa. But all is not well in paradise, or so it would appear in the first trailer of Angry Indian Goddesses.

Freida, one of the titular goddesses invites her girlfriends to Goa with a surprise: She is getting married. Very soon, everyone realizes that there is no escaping an impromptu bachelorette party. The trailer nicely cuts together gorgeous shots of the idyllic seaside town juxtaposed with scenes of high tension between the characters.

On the surface it looks like a crazy romp in a town famous for carelessness and bad decisions. But like Harmony Korine's great 2012 acid-trip-of-a-movie-with-bubble-gum-visuals Spring Breakers proved, things aren't always going to be as they appear. That film turned out to be a gun-toting tribute to Britney Spears and hedonism. Angry Indian Goddesses looks very similar, but this time it's all about strained relationships and hidden tension. As these characters (who are all very different by the way) spend more time with each other, old wounds are reopened. There are tears shrouded in the debauchery.

Lena Dunham's great HBO show Girls also comes to mind. This looks like a film we rarely see here, and honestly, we should stop looking at this as a Bollywood movie. Not only does it feature an all-female cast (which in itself is a rarity) all of them appear to be somewhat unsavoury and deeply flawed. The trailer would like you to believe it's a 'buddy movie', but something tells you that isn't how it's going to pan out.

Angry Indian Goddesses stars Rajshri Deshpande, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Sarah-Jane Dias, Sandhya Mridul, Amrit Maghera, Anushka Manchanda and Pavleen Gujral.

The film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 18. A release date should be announced soon after the premiere.
