'Kareena's Heroine is definitely a loser'

Heroine seems to have failed to impress audiences if the weekend collections are anything to go by. The Kareena Kapoor-starrer has bagged approximately Rs 25 crore over the weekend and trade pundits feel its outlook through the rest of the week will be grim.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine seems to have failed to impress audiences if the weekend collections are anything to go by. The Kareena Kapoor-starrer has bagged approximately Rs 25 crore (Friday: Rs 7.5 cr, Saturday: Rs 8.5 cr and Sunday: Rs 9 crore).

Though the film jointly produced by Madhur Bhandarkar and UTV Motion Pictures, made on a budget of approximately Rs 20 crore, may have covered its costs, trade pundits feel its outlook through the rest of the week will be grim.

“People expected it to be like The Dirty Picture, but it is not. It’s a very boring Fashion part 2,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta’s figures for the film’s opening weekend are somewhat different from the official figures. According to him, the Sunday collection was as low as Friday’s (Friday: Rs 7.25 to Rs 7.5, Saturday: Rs 7 cr and Sunday: Rs 7.5 crore). "Normally collections pick up on Sundays even if the Friday is not great. But that did not happen in this case," says Nahta. "A weekend collection of Rs 21.5 is not encouraging, especially because today’s (Monday) collection has crashed. That means it’s over now."

Though Nahta does not call Heroine a flop, he does say that it is “definitely a loser.”

However, Taran Adarsh has a different view. “The collection is approximately Rs 25 crore, which is good for a standalone film,” he says.

While exhibitors are not cutting shows, they do say that the collections are dropping. “It had a good opening but it kept dropping over the weekend. We are not cutting down the number of shows,” says a Big Cinemas spokesperson.

Girish Wankhede, deputy general manager, corporate communications and public relations at Cinemax India Ltd, Mumbai Area, believes the word-of-mouth reviews of the film were not very good. "The critics didn’t like the film so there was a low footfall initially. But on Saturday and Sunday, the night shows did better. Madhur’s films take some time to grow, so we are still hopeful," he says.

Anupama Chopra's review: Heroine

A Madhur Bhandarkar film has the same allure as a juicy tabloid or some particularly nasty gossip. Bhandarkar is a proudly pedestrian director. His movies are voyeuristic, sensational, sleazy. But invariably, the narrative includes a strong conservative streak so viewers can leer and still feel morally superior. Heroine is Bhandarkar’s great Bollywood exposé.
