Turkish writer Elif Shafak is the latest author to join the Future Library project, contributing a piece of writing that will be unearthed in 2114.

The Future Library is a project by Scottish artist Katie Paterson, who has envisioned a literary anthology that is written in the present day -- the project got under way in 2014 -- but only printed in 2114. A thousand trees have been planted outside Oslo to supply the paper for the anthology; for the next century, the forest must be tended, and its preservation ensured, while the writings are held in trust.

As the project continues, a new writer will be selected every year through 2114 to add to the growing collection, which is to be held in Bjørvika, Oslo.

Margaret Atwood was the first author to sign onto the Future Library in 2014, handing over a manuscript titled “Scribbler Moon” a year later, when David Mitchell took the reins. Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón then became the third writer to join the project.

Shafak was announced as the latest contributor this week via the Future Library’s social media accounts. The author, who writes in Turkish and English, is behind well-known novels including “The Bastard of Istanbul,” “The Forty Rules of Love,” “Honour,” and 2016’s “Three Daughters of Eve” and has written non-fiction work that has been published in a number of newspapers.
