The issue was also discussed in a general body meeting of Faculty Association held on Tuesday evening. According to sources, the issue was raised in the meeting by Dr TD Yadav, an additional professor at department of general surgery and department of urology’s Dr Santosh Kumar. Later it was supported unanimously by the Faculty Association that the PGI was in a dire need of upgradation as well as major increase in number of operation theatres.

“Many surgical faculty get to operate only once in two weeks. This has led to long queue of patients for various surgeries, ranging from 6 months to one year,” said president of the association Dr Virendra Singh said.

He said that the situation was demoralising the surgeons also. “It has decreased the enthusiasm amongst our surgical colleagues as they are unable to carry out patient care and research,” he said.

At present, all operation theatres are located on the fourth and fifth floor of the Nehru Hospital. These operation theatres were built in 1960s. However, the number of surgeons had increased in the past one decade but the operation theatres infrastructure have not been expanded during the same period.

Interestingly, the issue of getting operation theatre for surgeries even led to clashes between doctors in the past. The PGIMER performs more than 1.5 lakh minor and major surgeries every year. Out of these 34,000 are major surgeries.

As earlier highlighted by the HT, there is a long waiting list when it comes to surgeries. The longest waiting lists for surgeries include hernia repair, cataract, prostate repair.

There is a long list for life saving surgeries, including open heart bypass surgery where patients have to wait for at least for two months.

The situation is such that the PGIMER have stopped doing some of the routine surgeries and even if one has to get normal surgery like removal of gallbladder, one has to wait for at least six months.

Even the waiting list is for around one year in case of some routine surgeries.

Till some time back, the institute was also planning to build a new operation theatre block for which engineering wing of the institute was short-listing sights but nothing could happen at the ground.
