Adding more cheer to the Independence Day event will be the public that remained in low numbers amid sombre celebrations for the last two years

Subdued for the past two years amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Independence Day celebrations in Chandigarh this year will for the first time see the participation of the Indian Air Force (IAF) at the main programme at Parade Ground in Sector 17.

Children from schools, Snehalaya, GRIID and Institute for Blind will also return with cultural programmes. This will be followed by commendation certificates and medals that will be given away by the chief guest. The programme will conclude with the prize distribution ceremony.

Though UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit was scheduled to be chief guest, who will also unfurl the national flag, his attendance is uncertain after he tested positive for Covid on August 5.

7,500 students to attempt Guinness World Record

Two days before Independence Day, on August 13, over 7,500 students from Chandigarh University, Gharuan, and Chandigarh schools and colleges will gather at the Sector-16 Cricket Stadium to attempt a Guinness World Record by forming the largest human formation of a waving national flag.

UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit and minister of state for external affairs Meenakshi Lekhi are scheduled to be the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively.

The day-long event will also witness cultural activities, and a ceremony to acknowledge and honour the gallant actions and sacrifices of freedom fighters and armed forces personnel. Awards will also be conferred upon people for their exceptional achievements in the fields of arts, education, sports, medicine, public affairs, social service and literature.
