Delhi records 416 new Covid cases, highest in over seven months

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in the review meeting on Friday said that there is no immediate cause for concern as the government is taking all necessary measures.

Delhi on Saturday recorded 416 new Covid cases- highest in over seven months with which the positivity rate in the capital stands at 14.37%, news agency PTI reported quoting the latest health bulletin. Earlier, Delhi reported 295 new Covid cases with a positivity rate of 12.48% on Thursday.

Amid concern over the spike in cases, Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal held a review meeting on Friday, pacifying residents that there was no immediate cause for concern as the government was taking all necessary measures.

Genome sequencing of all samples that test positive for Covid-19 are being carried out to detect any new variants promptly, he informed, adding that the XBB.1.16 variant is currently the most prevalent, accounting for 48% of all positive cases.

While it spreads rapidly, it is not severe, he said.

Although no new guidelines have been put in place by the Delhi government with respect to wearing masks in public places.

With the fresh cases, the city's Covid tally has increased to 20,10,312. The data showed that 2,895 Covid tests were conducted on Friday. Ninety-five of the 7,986 beds are occupied in dedicated Covid hospitals in the city, while 717 patients are in home isolation, the health department said. The number of active cases of the infection currently stands at 1,216, it added.

India registered 2,995 cases in the last 24 hours, according to union health ministry's data updated on Satuday showing a slight dip in daily coronavirus infections. The active caseload crossed 16,000-mark, data showed.
