The woman, aged around 36 years, was sent to PGI Rohtak on Wednesday, said the health department officials.

In a shocking turn of events, a woman and her 10-year-old son were rescued from a flat in Block-A of Maruti Vihar in Sector-28 where they had been locked in for the past three years as the woman didn’t let her son venture out or her husband to come in to meet them fearing Covid, police said.

Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer of Gurugram, said that several tests will be carried out to know her mental condition.

“The mother-son duo was physically fit. However, some tests would be carried out on the child too,” he said. The family was contacted but they refused to comment anything on the matter.

Police said that they were investigating if the woman had taken any special permission for online classes from the private school where the son was studying as her father alleged that he was paying the tuition fees.

Assistant sub-inspector Parveen Kumar Khanna said that the matter came to light three days back when the woman’s husband approached them seeking help to rescue his son as his wife was not allowing him to meet the child.

“It seemed to be a marital discord to us initially. However, later we found that the woman probably had some disorder due to which she feared that her son would get infected with Covid-19. Issues started from February-March 2020 and continued till Tuesday. The husband, an engineer in a private firm, had to take another accommodation on rent nearby the place where the duo were living,” he said.

Khanna said that the woman had two cooking cylinders initially and she switched to an induction oven for cooking after they were exhausted.

“She only ordered packed food items which could be washed with soap. She didn’t use the overhead tank’s stored water fearing it would make her and the son ill. The child’s hairs had grown long and she used to cut them at home. Her entire house was filled with garbage,” he said.

Khanna said that he took the woman into confidence after talking to her over video call five-six times and then finally calling her down on the road on Tuesday.

“We all told her that her husband is alleging that she had some medical condition and she must get tests carried out to prove her husband wrong. She agreed and we finally managed to bring her son out too. The husband actually waited that her wife's condition might change and things to become normal but it never happened after which he finally approached police,” he said.

A woman living on the ground floor of the house in which the mother-son duo lived, alleged that woman used to come down sometimes to meet her husband but never allowed him or the son to meet each other.

“She avoided delivery boys too. She was living here for the last eight years but hardly interacted with us,” she said.
