Bad roads push school officials to stage dharna in Kalyan

Jan 10, 2023 09:42 PM IST

The three-kilometre stretch of the National Highway is in poor condition with potholes, several portions dug up and being waterlogged.

Kalyan: A day after a 14-year-old student was injured after his two-wheeler skidded, his school’s administrator sat on a protest on the waterlogged road outside the institute and highlighted its pathetic condition.

Mishaps involving skidding of vehicles are regularly reported on this stretch, said the administrator of the school, adding, “Tomorrow some major tragedy will take place. Before anything of that sort happens, we want the authority to act.” (Pramod Tambe/HT Photo)

“On Sunday, after his baseball practice, while returning, my two-wheeler skidded due to the muddy road and waterlogging,” Anuja Salvi, mother of the student, said. “I lost balance and fell. Luckily, there were no vehicles behind us.”

The incident happened on the Kalyan-Murbad National Highway 61.

“I had planned this sit-in on January 22, but after her mother told me about her son’s accident and expressed her concern over his safety, I decided to do it now,” Albin Antony, administrator of Sacred Heart School, said. He questioned what the authorities are doing about the problem.

The three-kilometre stretch of the National Highway is in poor condition with potholes, several portions dug up and being waterlogged. Last year too, the school staff staged a protest, initiating repairs of the road after the students were forced to walk to the institute due to heavy traffic congestion on the stretch.

The school administration and the locals have been demanding the speeding up of the concretisation.

Mishaps involving skidding of vehicles are regularly reported on this stretch, said Antony, adding, “Tomorrow some major tragedy will take place. Before anything of that sort happens, we want the authority to act.”

“In the last three days, I have mailed the authority several times, but there is no response from them,” he said.

Jyoti Shinde, executive engineer, NHAI, Thane said, “The concretisation work of this particular stretch is underway. We have already served a notice to the contractor to look into the waterlogged area and get it fixed. April is the deadline for the project and we are focusing on the completion of the work.”
