Five districts of Manipur -- Churachandpur, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong and Ukhrul -- share a 398-km-long international border with Myanmar.

Police officials familiar with the matter said the three Myanmarese-- Wimnintay (28) Win Naing Thon (27) and Biaka (17)-- were detained under the Foreigners Act for illegally entering India and were at the Temporary Jail of the Churachandpur district. Win Naing Thon and Winmintay had been at the Temporary jail since April 4, 2021, while Biaka was detained on March 29 last year. All three reportedly fled from the temporary jail and were discovered missing around 8am on Sunday.

A police official, when contacted on phone, confirmed the incident and said the police are investigating the matter. “The Myanmar nationals have been booked under Sections 224 (Obstruction to lawful apprehension) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)”, said the official, who did not want to be named.

In June last year, Manipur police teams apprehended 80 Myanmar nationals, including 20 children, from different locations of Churachandpur district during a daylight operation. All the apprehended persons, including 25 men and 35 women, disclosed that they are all citizens of Myanmar but failed to produce valid documents to justify their presence in Indian territory.
