Drugs worth over 405 crore seized in Mizoram and Assam; two held

Police estimate the cost of the narcotics at ₹390.4 crore. According to the statement by the IG, Assam Rifles, “The consignment was coming from Myanmar and the suspected drugs supplying racket was planning to transport it to different Indian states.”

In two separate operations in Mizoram and Assam, police and Assam Rifles seized narcotics worth 405.4 crore and arrested two suspected drug peddlers. Both the consignments were coming from Myanmar, according to the police.

Based on specific information, a team led by the Assam Rifles (east) inspector general (IG) with Mizoram’s custom department carried out an operation and recovered a total of 39,04,000 Triprolidine HCL and Pseudoephedrine HCL tablets from a vehicle in Mizoram’s Champhai district and arrested one person.

“Smuggling of illegal drugs is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram and the entire northeast. Assam Rifles are keeping a strict vigil on each of these moves. This is one of a kind and amongst the largest catches made by security forces,” Assam Rifles said.

In another incident, Assam police seized 1.5 lakh Yaba tablets worth over 15 crore from a vehicle coming from Mizoram’s Champhai district and arrested a 33-year-old resident of Aizawl.

Numal Mahatta, superintendent of police (SP), Cachar district, said that based on the specific information, they launched an operation in various parts of Silchar town on Thursday morning.

“The price of Yaba tablets are dynamic in Indian markets and the estimated price of these seized tablets can be 15 to 60 crore rupees,” Mahatta said.

“The vehicle was intercepted near a market area in the town which is not far from my office. This is so far the biggest seizure of Yaba tablets in Silchar city,” Mahatta said.

Police said that the arrested accused, identified as Lalsawmliana, is one of the suspected masterminds of interstate drugs who had previously been arrested for similar activities.

The SP informed that each Yaba tablet is priced at 100 in Mizoram Champhai and its price reaches 500 by the time it enters Assam.

In Assam markets, the price goes up to 1000 and once it reaches other states, the price reaches 3000 to 5000.
