India vs England: Five turning points in India’s series win at Wankhede Stadium

India finally broke an eight-year jinx of losing Test series -- home and away – against England. The innings and 36-runs win on Monday in the fourth Test at the Wankhede stadium gave India an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-Test series. (HIGHLIGHTS)

While India took only eight overs on the fifth morning to win, there have been some game-turning individual performances that helped skipper Virat Kohli, who built this as a revenge series, to regain the Anthony De Mello trophy. Here is a look at the five big moments

England were coasting on Day 1 with debutant Keaton Jennings, who scored his maiden ton and Moeen Ali going strong on 50. Enter Ravichandran Ashwin. He removed both Jennings (112) and Moeen (50) in the same over to stall England’s advantage of batting first on a wicket that assisted spin. He removed the dangerous Ben Stokes early on day 2 but England managed to reach 400.

Heading into the Mumbai Test, England were looking to exploit Murali Vijay’s ‘weakness’ to the short ball. However, Vijay put in a magnificent display and his role at the top was very crucial. After KL Rahul’s early dismissal, he shared a 107-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara as India got off to a steady start. After Pujara’s dismissal early on day 3, Vijay rebuilt the innings with Virat Kohli. He grew in confidence and notched up his third Test ton against England. Vijay departed for 136 but he had given India the platform to overhaul England.

Virat Kohli can do no wrong in this calendar year. After Vijay’s dismissal, Kohli had to see out the difficult period where India slid from a comfortable position of 262/2 to a tricky 305/5. He found great support in Jayant Yadav as India took a 51-run lead. On Day 4, Kohli stepped up and smashed many records. He went past 4000 runs and also notched up 2000 runs as skipper. He went one better as he notched up his third double century in Tests as India posted a mammoth 631. Kohli had put on a masterclass.

The eighth wicket partner of 241 runs between skipper Virat Kohli and India’s No.9 batsman Jayant Yadav was the difference maker for India. At 364/7, India were in a tricky position. However, both batsmen turned the match completely as India took a healthy lead. Jayant Yadav became the first Indian No.9 batsman to score a Test century. The 241-run stand surpassed the previous best of 161 by Mohammad Azharuddin and Anil Kumble against South Africa in 1996.

Just like Virat Kohli, Ashwin can do no wrong in 2016. The off-spinner had toiled all afternoon on day 4 but was wicket less going into the last hour. He first removed Ben Stokes and then Jake Ball in the last over of the day to open the floodgates. He took all the last four England wickets to fall on day 5 as he ended with 6/55. England were bowled out for 195 and India had finally secured their first series win against England after eight years.
