2 years in a row, same stretch of road caves in

A portion of Kasturba Gandhi (KG) Marg caved in on Thursday evening, after intermittent rains lashed the Capital.
The same stretch had developed a three-foot crater last year, too, unable to withstand heavy rains.
According to officials, several underground sewerage and water pipelines were punctured due to mindless digging — carried out for Commonwealth Games-related projects — and over a period of time, gave way.
Last year, the city reported major cases of road cave-ins, with many roads under the jurisdiction of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) also collapsing. The civic agency has blamed trenchless digging — which is still being carried out — for the cave-in at KG Marg.
“The road caved in due to trenchless digging. Our workers will work on it overnight and try to fix it as soon as possible. One portion of the road has been cordoned off and traffic movement restricted,” said Anand Tiwari, NDMC spokesperson.
Soon after the road collapse, although half the carriageway was shut for repairs, vehicles were allowed to pass through the other half.
However, as it was raining throughout the evening, traffic was affected. Meanwhile, incidents of building collapse were reported from Babarpur, Pushp Vihar and Kusumpur areas.
