On-the-run Dawood associate arrested in Sangam Vihar
An associate of Dawood Ibrahim, who escaped from a train while being taken for a court hearing to Rajasthan, was arrested in south Delhi, reports Abhishek Bhalla.
An associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, who escaped from a train while being taken for a court hearing to Rajasthan, was arrested in south Delhi, police said on Tuesday.
They said Anil Soni, a sharpshooter working for Ibrahim, was held in Sangam Vihar on Monday, days after he fled while being taken to Bikaner by Rajasthan Police.
Delhi Police have also arrested all the members of the Rajasthan police team who were escorting him for allegedly conniving with Soni.
Soni, a school dropout, is from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. He moved to Mumbai in 1993, and was soon introduced to the world of crime.
"He disclosed that he joined the underworld in 1994 and began extorting money from people on the orders of the mafia based in Dubai," said Anil Shukla, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South. The police said he had also planned to target a film actor in 1996.
He later shifted base to Delhi and was arrested in a fake currency racket in 1999. "He conducted extortions even when he was in judicial custody. He has also threatened some film stars," Shukla added.
The Delhi Police got information about his whereabouts from associates in Delhi who were involved in cases of fake currency and extortion. Acting on a tip off the police arrested him from Mehrauli- Badarpur near Kaya Maya hospital.
