Woman found dead in bag still remains unidentified

She seems destined to be reduced to a mere name on a list before finally being relegated to a dusty bunch of police records.

A week and more than 50 enquiries about her later, the identity of the 22-year-old woman, whose body was recovered from a black carry bag at New Delhi Railway Station last Friday, remains a mystery despite the police's best efforts.

"As per law, we preserved her body for identification for the first 72 hours after it was discovered on the morning of February 11. We then extended the process by another three days that is till February 18," said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

"As many as 55 enquiries about her have been entertained till now but not a single one has stepped forward to claim her body. We have to take a decision about conducting her post mortem tomorrow," additional DCP Gurjar added.

On the eve of her sixth, and probably the last, day under preservation at Lady Hardinge Hospital, sources said not a single person had come to enquire about her on Thursday.

"It's more or less a blind murder case; we will be able to ascertain her identity only if we nab someone for her murder," said a senior police officer.

Meanwhile, desperate parents and relatives of other missing girls across age groups had been running to the New Delhi Railway Station.

One of them was Genda Kumar (25), who scrambled to produce different prints of his six-year-old niece Muskan's picture for almost anyone stepping out of the New Delhi Railway Station's Police Station.

"Someone told my family that a girl's body had been found and a lot of people were coming to identify her. Perhaps one of them has seen Muskan,” he said.

Muskan disappeared while playing outside her residence in Gulabi Bagh on Friday.
