“I studied only four hours after school, and that, I feel, is enough if you are regular,” the student of Jayshree Periwal High School said.

She does not have an account on any of the social media platforms and was without a mobile phone until recently. Her father Pankaj Gupta said he forcefully gave her a phone after she enrolled in a coaching class for common law admission test (CLAT).

“We want to be in touch with her if she gets late in school or coaching,” the Indian Forest Service officer said.

The 16-year-old said she wants to become a judge in the Supreme Court after getting into a premier law college.

Her teachers said they expected her to score the highest in the school because she got 98% in the pre-board exam as well. Yana’s mother, Pratibha, is a homemaker, and she has a younger brother who is in Class 4.

According to the school’s chairperson Jayshree Periwal, 135 students have scored above 90% and she applauded them for their remarkable feat.

Arushi Goyal of India International School of the Pink City scored 97.8% marks.

“I performed well in my exams and expected a good score but never dreamt of scoring 97.8% and becoming a school topper. I am really grateful to all the people who made this possible. Hard work surely pays off,” said Goyal.

School’s director Ashok Gupta and principal Mala Agnihotri were happy with the performance of their students. Fifty-five students from the school have scored 90% and above, they said.

Meenal Gupta of Subodh Public School scored 97.2%. There were 26 students from the school who have scored 90% and above said school’s assistant vice-principal Sanjay Parashar.

Four students, including three girls, got 499 out of 500 marks to emerge as the joint toppers in Class 10 board examination, according to results declared by the Central Board of Secondary Education on Tuesday.

Prakhar Mittal from DPS Gurgaon, Rimjhim Agarwal from RP Public School Bijnor, Nandini Garg from Scottish International School Shamli and Sreelakshmi G from Bhavan Vidyalaya in Cochin scored the same marks.

Rimjhim Agarwal from RP Public School in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor, Nandini Garg of Scottish International School in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli, Sreelakshmi G of Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya in Kerala’s Kochi and Prakhar Mittal from DPS in Gurgaon’s Sector 45 were the joint toppers.

Seven students secured the second position with 498 marks and 14 students bagged the third spot with a score of 497. Officials said 131,493 students crossed the 90% mark and 27,476 scored more than 95% out of more than 16 lakh who appeared for the exam.

The overall pass percentage, however, fell to 86.70 from 90.95 last year, registering a dip of 4.25 percentage points. In 2016, 96.21% students cleared the exam. Girls did better than boys with an overall passing percentage of 88.67 compared to 85.32 for boys, repeating a pattern seen for the last few years.
