“For the past few days, my party workers and also the electors of my constituency are directly or indirectly being harassed by the Gujarat Range IG office, Special Operations Group office, the Kalol city police inspector and other agencies. False charges are being framed against my workers and some citizens are being called up to the police station and threatened that if they don’t support the BJP in this election, then cases will be registered against them. The workers with prior cases will be jailed and those who don’t have any previous cases against them are being mentally tortured to quit campaigning and sit at home. Mine and my worker’s phones are being taped. Cases are being filed against workers who are campaigning on the social media,” he said in his complaint.

He further said, “To verify my complaint, I request to have the CCTV footage of the said police station and other offices since the past 10 days. An atmosphere of fear is being created using the police and other agencies, and in these circumstances, free and fair elections cannot be carried out. My region’s entire police force is involved to benefit the BJP.”

Responding to the allegations, Kalol deputy superintendent of police PD Manavar told HT that a probe has been initiated.

“The inquiry is going on in this. Till date, he (Baldevji) hasn’t named anyone in his allegations. I have repeatedly asked him to provide me the names of citizens and party workers who are being pressurised by police based on the complaints so that I can take further action. But he has not provided me any names... So, these are only general allegations,” Manavar said.
