Vincent Desjardins began Ballroom dancing when he was about six. He moved on to do Hip-Hop at 12. The first runner-up at So You Think You Can Dance admits that he had stage phobia too.

Have you seen any of the dance shows on Indian TV?
I’m not really into watching a lot of TV. I always prefer watching movies. So unfortunately I haven’t gotten a chance to see dance-based reality shows on Indian TV.

Are you aware of the Bollywood dance style?
Yes, I have seen Bollywood dance. I’ve seen it on So You Think You Can Dance and a little bit on You Tube.

Since Shiamak Davar is bringing you down, you’ll surely do some Bollywood numbers as well?
I really hope to do it. Shiamak is undoubtedly the best choreographer in the country and it will be an amazing experience learning his style of dancing.

What made Shiamak and you decide to work together?
Tara Jean and I have known about Shiamak for quite some time. His dance school in Canada is immensely popular. One day, Tara Jean and I were teaching class at Harbour Dance Centre (where Shiamak’s classes also happen) when one of his team members approached us and asked if we would be interested in coming to India to teach at his centres.

Coming to India and that too, with the country’s most celebrated and well-known dance personality, was something we obviously couldn’t refuse. We said ‘yes’ immediately.

Do you think your style of dance can fit into Bollywood?
I really like to think that ballroom (which is one of my favourite styles) and Bollywood can make a great mix. They’re two really different styles. But Hip-hop and Bollywood are great together for sure. Hip-hop can always be fused with everything.

Would you try experimenting with Indian dance forms?
I would love to try it, but honestly, I don’t know the other styles of Indian dances.

A lot of dance reality shows here do not include traditional dance forms in the scheme of things. Does that happen abroad too?
It’s difficult to say. I haven’t seen dance-based shows in India, so I’m not really aware of their format. In So You think You Can Dance, we saw varied dance forms being displayed, from salsa to contemporary, to quickstep and more.

Shouldn’t we learn some dance forms of our own too, before we copy others?
I think everyone brings his or her own style to every genre, no matter which one it is. No two dancers are the same and that’s the reason dance is so special.
