This season belongs to Palazzo pants. Stack away your skinny denims, jeggings and leggings and head off for these colourful, loose and buoyant 60s-style trousers instead.

This season belongs to Palazzo pants. Stack away your skinny denims, jeggings and leggings and head off for these colourful, loose and buoyant 60s-style trousers instead. Available in soft fabrics such as linen, crepe, chiffon, jersey and more, they are not only comfortable but also a fashionable way to beat the blazing heat. The pants, which remind you of the kind worn by yesteryear divas such as Katharine Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, are being hailed by fashion designers back home. The trick, they say, is to team them right.

"Wear crumpled Palazzos with body hugging T-shirts. Opt for ballerina flats or wedge heels with them. Complete your look with a satchel-style bag on the side," says Delhi-based fashion designer Reynu Taandon. Since Palazzos are bottom-heavy, flowy and flared around the legs, it’s best to team them with a light and fitted silhouettes. "Wear only fitted tops with Palazzos to avoid looking shabby," warns fashion designer Gaurav Gupta. Experiment with tank tops, spaghetti, camisoles or blouses and corsets that fit you well, and let the pants flow wide below.

This will help you maintain a long and shapely frame. Palazzos are up for grabs in the city in different fabrics, colours and prints. Go for the plain ones in bright colours or the ones with different floral and geometrical prints. Both high-end stores and street markets such as Janpath, Sarojni Nagar, Kamla Nagar are flooded with a wide variety of options.

Pants that let you loosen up
Cut with a loose, exceptionally wide leg that flares out from the waist, Palazzo pants are long trousers for women. Other types of wide legged trousers are also available in the market. But don’t confuse your Palazzos with these:

Bellbottoms: Palazzo pants flare out from the waist and have a straight leg. On the other hand, bellbots are snug until they flare out from the knee
Gaucho Trousers: Gaucho trousers only go down to the knee or mid-calf. Palazzo pants, on the other hand, extend to the ankle or below it
Harem Pants: Harems have a tight cuff around the ankles while Palazzos are loose and wide
Parallels: Parallel leg trousers are straight too, but not as wide as Palazzos.

Styling tips
Here are a few tips on how to style your Palazzos right...

Style Tip 1: Pair up Palazzos with floral, tribal or graphic prints with plain summery tank tops
Style Tip 2: Tuck your shirt/top/blouse in when wearing it with Palazzos. This makes you look taller. Add wedge heels or block heels to add a few more inches to your height
Style Tip 3: To pep up your plain Palazzo pants, pair them with fitted tops and add on colourful scarves belts, bangles, earrings and so on.
