Gurugram police to single out crime-ridden zones, increase patrol

Police commissioner KK Rao directed, on Saturday, all the 40 station house officers (SHOs) in the city to identify crime-prone spots in their respective areas and prepare a station-wise data of vacant plots, stretches with high footfall, dimly lit areas and areas prone to crime.

Rao addressed a meeting of police officers to discuss ways to improve safety in Gurugram as over 496 cases of house theft, 168 cases of snatching and 21 robberies have been reported between January and August 15 this year.

Police said non-functional streetlights in areas, such as Sushant Lok-1, Sector 37C, Sector 82 to 90 and Sector 57, pose a big challenge to checking crime in the city.

“Once the process is complete, we will coordinate with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) for better lighting and get overgrown bushes cut, fencing and forming a team to manage the uninhabited plots to prevent criminal activities,” Rao said. He also added that the police intend to increase patrolling in areas from where they have received a high number of complaints.

He instructed each police station to set up temporary pickets at vulnerable points, besides regular patrolling, and deploy sufficient personnel at these points between 10pm and 6am.

To keep a check on snatching, effective verification of all recorded snatchers and intensive checking of two-wheelers has been ordered.

Suspects are being photographed, along with their motorcycles. Besides better communication with locals and informers, action has also been ordered against people giving surety of snatchers who have jumped bail.

Responding to the steps being taken to check crime, DLF Phase 2 RWA general secretary Gaurav Wahi said, “This initiative will help curb crime and ensure a dip in snatching and theft cases. We are ready to help the police identify shady stretches.”
