Decline of 1.95% in total number of teachers last year: Govt informs Parliament

There has been a decline of at least 1.95% in the total number of teachers last year, the ministry of education told Parliament on Tuesday.

As many as 1.45% of teachers in government-aided schools, 0.9% in government schools and 2.94% in private schools decreased last year, the ministry told.

The Centre, however, said that education was a state subject, and the recruitment, service and deployment of teachers come under the purview of the respective states.

There has been a decrease of almost 95 lakh teachers in total, across different schools in the country last year alone, the ministry said.

Raising the issue in Parliament, the Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) MP Mimi Chakraborty asked the government, whether the proposal to upgrade the teacher strength, as suggested in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was under the pipeline.

The minister of state (MoS) in the ministry of education, Annapurna Devi told Parliament, that through review meetings and advisories, the Centre has requested the states to fill up the vacant posts of teachers in a timely manner.

“Recruitment is a continuous process and vacancies get generated due to a number of factors like retirement, resignation, increased requirement of teachers as a result of enhanced students’ strength,” the minister said.
