Less than 18 hours earlier, three motorcycle-borne youths looted over Rs 3 lakh from a petrol pump manager in Bhopal. Three days before, armed robbers had committed two loots in fifteen minutes in Berasia. Scores of policemen were sent to Suhaya and neighbouring areas to catch the robbers, including prime suspect Parvat Sapera.

The deceased, Soni and his friend Ashok Dhakad, 24, had come to Bhopal on their bike for repair of a cell phone and were returning late in the night when a gang of robbers surrounded them before Suhaya.

They attacked them with lathis. Soni received multiple injuries and fell unconscious. The gang members robbed them of their possessions, including two cell phones, gold chain, a ring and Rs 1,500 cash before they escaped.
Dhakad somehow reached a toll tax barrier near Shamshabad and subsequently informed the police. Soni was rushed to the hospital and after midnight referred to Bhopal, where he succumbed around 3 am. The Berasia police registered a case and began investigations.
