All but SP demand Central forces

BARRING THE Samajwadi Party, all other prominent political parties, today urged the Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy to deploy only the Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) for the forthcoming Vidhan Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh.
Most of the parties asserted that they were ready to go to polls anytime and left the issue of decision on election dates on the EC. The parties, however, requested the EC to take into account the dates of the Ardh Kumbh, High School and Intermediate examinations and the Holi festival while deciding the dates for the poll.
The Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Lok Dal and the CPI (M), however, said February 2007 would be the ideal month for holding the polls.
Significantly the BJP, the BSP and the Congress demanded that the poll should be held under the President’s rule as free and fair election would not be possible during the tenure of Mulayam Singh Yadav as the chief minister. The parties said that the EC should hold UP polls on Bihar pattern.
The Samajwadi Party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, however, called all the apprehensions as baseless. The Rae Bareli by-election was held during the tenure of Mulayam government and the Congress won the seat by a record margin, he said. If the SP had misused the official machinery, the BJP and Congress would not have won the mayoral seats, said Yadav. He also rubbished allegations that officers of only one caste have been posted in districts. There were only two Yadav district police chiefs, one Yadav IG and five Yadav district magistrates in 70 districts of UP, he said.
The Congress Legislative Party leader Pramod Tiwari referred to the Mainpuri district magistrate’s decision to proceed on leave to make his point that the officers working in an impartial manner were being victimised. The BJP leaders also alleged that the SP-led government had politicised bureaucracy and the police.
