Lucknowites love good food. Junk, continental, South Indian, Chinese, Italian or 'desi ishtyle thela', these foodies can go 20 kms to attend a Mahotsav and eat Rajasthani cuisine. Fair means eating, eating and saying I'm lovin' it! Wave East End Mall started the trend of 'organised eating' with food chains and the addition of food court at Sahara Ganj eating out has been a different meaning.

From khasta samosa to pizzas, the city loves to have a big bite off everything. A fair means some window-shopping and a lot of food. Now the ball is in the food court. Here is how!

Wave East End Mall started the trend of 'organised eating' with food chains and the addition of food court at Sahara Ganj eating out has been a different meaning.

Successful city-based restaurants are also expanding in various localities. Walk into any eating or coffee joint in the evening, one would find people waiting on their tables. Even standing in a long queue for token is welcome. So what  if they don't get a parking place near Rajan Café, they know a bite off the basket chaat means the day has been made!

Food ring
Food buffs now don't need to go to different joints to eat their choice. Now in food court they can pick their eatables from various stalls/shops and relish them.

“This is fun. I am having my choice of chicken soup from Royal Café, my mom - a vegetarian and South Indian food lover - having fare from Dosa Plaza, we also had burger from Jack In The Box while in the main course we settle for Tundey's delight on the open terrace of Sahara Ganj,” said Sneha Tripathi. Lucknowites are loving the new trend and they can be seen beeline at the Royal Café, Tundey and other stalls and enjoy it in the huge common enclosure..

Tasty concepts
“Our aim is to give city all possible cuisine in Sahara Ganj at par with the metros. We are developing a theme probably Italian or Mexican, which will be a highlight on the terrace. As the food court gets fully functional, we will come up with food festivals regularly. To make it pocket-friendly we ensure no one charges anything on premium rates,” said Surya Vir Singh, assistant chief manager of Sahara India Commercial Corporation Ltd.

“We brought Tundey stall at our mall because it has became a popular brand not only in city across the country and even abroad. Revelers should get the taste of city along with popular food chains,” Singh added.

Another bowl
Lately, Aryans has opened its fourth chain at Shahnajaf Road. Mc Donalds, Dosa Plaza, Royal Café, Jack in the Box, Spicy Bite and Tundey Kababi have come up at Sahara Ganj.

Kitchen queue
Coming up is 9,200 sq ft of food court on the top floor of Wave East End mall. Ruby's Tuesday, Costa Coffee Bar and Sagar Ratna will soon be there at Wave.

Says Dheeraj Sharma manager operations: “The food court will be operational by March end while there will also be a pub-cum-lounge with a terrace ambiance added to it. The court will have single billing system and will be operated with single person in coordination with us. It will have various themes like South India, Mughlai, Oriental (Mexican, Thai and Italian).” At Sahara Ganj - Barista, Copper Chimney, Moti Mahal and Shanghai Surprise (pub-cum-lounge) will be added soon. Also watch out for array of things lined at the Zee's Fun Republic Mall, which is scheduled to be operational by July.

Food a-fair
Sample this. A scene at the recent Shilp Mela at UP Sangeet Natak Akademi which had over 100 national award artisans displaying and selling their crafts.

Food court here was, apparently, as a support system to the mela. But people instead of flocking to the shilp stalls, crowded up at the food court that offered food from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab and few other places. A brass artisan who is a national awardee, with jealous contempt, commented: “They have no awards, but it is to them that the people are flocking. They have business. We have none.”

He rued the high business that the small food court made. Lucknow Mahotsav may be dubbed as a failure but the food arena certainly did brisk business.
