Dealing with the deal

The Indo-US civilian nuclear deal is an acceptance by the US of India’s status as a responsible nuclear power and an economic entity that cannot be ignored. It gives India the right to test nuclear devices if warranted by the security environment, and the US to examine if such a test was actually necessary. But our neighbours may provoke us to go in for Pokhran 3 and sabotage this deal. So, it would be better if India negotiates a nuclear shield from the US and other members of the nuclear club.

In the 123 nuclear deal, we are offered nuclear fuel that the US cannot use. as under US laws no new reactor is allowed to be constructed. India is to pay for the fuel, but the agreement is not clear on the question of ownership of the nuclear waste. Under US laws, the waste could not be returned to America. India pays for the fuel and is responsible for long-term waste management without being permitted to enrich by reprocessing the nuclear waste for military purposes.
