With reference to Sukhadeo Thorat’s article Learning curves (October 15), HRD Minister Arjun Singh highlighted the sad state of higher education at a meeting with the VCs of universities. There must be a consensus that the government should not act as an estate agent to acquire land for private institutions. This scheme has been tried in the past while setting up medical institutions and it has not worked in the majority of cases. Considering the exorbitant amount these institutions charge, they should also acquire their land and pay remunerative prices to the owners rather than come with a begging bowl to the government.

Destabilisation plan

The blast at the dargah of Khwaja Nawaz is deplorable. Moreover, Ajmer is a place of religious harmony. Hindus outnumber Muslims when it comes to seeking blessings from Khwaja Saheb. Some elements are hell-bent on destabilising the entire nation through their sinister acts. The government should give a befitting reply to them.

Not a good job

The National Rural Employment Generation scheme is the brainchild of the UPA government. But its impact has not been properly evaluated. Without proper scrutiny, it is unwise to extend the programme to all 600 districts. It does not speak well of the government to ignore sensitive analysis and succumb to pressure from Rahul Gandhi. It seems the government is sandwiched between the Leftists and the Gandhi family.
