They took this historic decision on Saturday to create one of the state’s finest “unified digital control rooms” in Lucknow for transmitting a bouquet of television programmes which would enable 1.5 lakh cable television viewers watch more than 300 channels from the cosy comforts of their homes by end of 2006.

This information was given by Anil Upadhyaya, president, UP Cable Operators’ Welfare Association.

“I am talking of a digital reality which is going to be right there in your homes. We (cable operators) are going to get rid of our old analog equipment which has constraints in transmitting new channels being launched in India”, he said.  An “analog format” is that in which information is transmitted by “modulating” a continuous transmission signal, which means amplifying a television or radio signal’s strength for transmission.

The very basis of using state-of-the-art digital equipment for distribution of television programmes is to move with the technological advancement for offering world-class programmes to the viewers.

“Analog system of cable TV transmission is dying everywhere and once there is a “unified digital control room” for cable operators in Lucknow, you would also get the benefits of  “convergence” by attaching your computer to the television set-up boxes and surfing the internet seamlessly at a very high speed”,

Upadhyaya said. “We have already conveyed to the state government our plans to go digital within a year. The digital distribution of programmes would also streamline the payment collection systems of cable operators”, he said.

A large cable operator, with very expensive analog equipment, closed down his “analog control room” on Saturday as he could not afford the cost of maintaining them any longer, Upadhyaya said.
