Govt, citizens should go hand-in-hand: FM

"The first way citizens can help is to abide by laws. We must become a law-abiding society. If the law is bad, we change the law but as long as they are there, we must abide by the laws," Chidambaram said while accepting citizens' charter from CNN-IBN .

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said government and citizens, by working together, can raise the country's preparedness in the fight against terror.

"I think by working together, abiding by the law, heightening vigilance, sharing information, it is possible to raise our preparedness to fight terror," he said in New Delhi.

The Minister said common citizens can help in fight against terrorism by abiding by the laws of the country.

"The first way citizens can help is to abide by laws. We must become a law-abiding society. If the law is bad, we change the law but as long as they are there, we must abide by the laws," Chidambaram said while accepting citizens' charter from CNN-IBN .

He said government is trying to work out a system, which can be used by the citizens to share information with authorities without too much "interface and interruption."

"We are trying to work out a system by which such information can be sent without too much of interface and interruption," the Minister said.

The citizens, Chidambaram said, can help in maintaining vigil in society also. "Citizens can help in maintaining heightened state of vigilance."
