The future in-laws of a 33-year-old man thrashed him black and blue on Monday night, reports Rahul Karmakar.

This could be a rather ‘hair-raising’ warning for all sons-in-law. The future in-laws of a 33-year-old man thrashed him black and blue on Monday night besides “confiscating” his wallet, mobile phone, motorbike and driving license. The man’s fault: he had kept his baldness under wraps — a wig rather.

Employed with a private hospital and a resident of Pandu locality here, Prabir Das had two months back placed a matrimonial in a local Bengali daily. Retired engineer Dilip Roy, a resident of the city’s Odalbakra area, responded to the bride-seeking ad.

Das was subsequently engaged to Roy’s daughter Shreshtaa, and their marriage was scheduled for December 12. The Roys also spent a fortune on furniture and other items as dowry.

However, Das’s world turned upside down after his fiance’s family invited him over for dinner on Monday. No sooner did he step into the house than Roy’s wife Khuku began raining slaps on the dumbfounded man. Others in the Roy household took over, thrashed Das and yanked his wig off.

They also snatched all his belongings including the mobile phone as “punishment” for duping them. An acquaintance of the Roys had apparently tipped them off about their “bald” son-in-law to be. Later, Das lodged a complaint against his would-be in-laws.

“We have taken Dilip Roy into custody for questioning,” said an inspector at the police outpost on Wednesday.
