Being half a world away from home, over 2000 Indians, gathered at the Pearson Convention Centre in Toronto on Sunday to celebrate the 57th Republic day, transformed the centre into "Mini-India."
Patriotic Indian songs echoed the air with several cultural programmes including many performances by children about India's freedom struggle and achievements of past five decades.
An exhibition of Indian textile goods, jams and jewellery, and handicrafts was also organised to mark the occasion.
The function was organised by 'Panorama India', umbrella organisation of Indo-Canadian Associations, and Consulate General of India.
Speaking about the significance of the day, Consul General Satish Mehta said that the day was one of the most important days in Indian history as it was this day, the Constitution of India came into force and the nation became sovereign laying foundation for democratic polity, rule of law, institutions, and fundamental freedoms.
