Iraqi troops still hold the Iraqi river port of Umm Qasr but British and American troops expect to take it shortly, UK officers said today.

There had been conflicting reports whether the port, located on the Iraq-Kuwait border, had fallen to coalition forces. British military officials, interviewed 10 kilometres south of Umm Qasr, said they expected to seize the town in the course of the day.

That would give US and British forces access to a port to bring in more supplies for the war against Saddam Hussein.
