Multi-cornered contest likely at Bar election

THE KANPUR Bar Association election will witness multi-cornered contest this time as none of the candidate seems to be sailing for a straightway win.A total of 138 candidates are in the election fray. Twelve candidates are contesting for the post of president, 8 for general secretary, 18 for vice-president, 14 for secretary, 12 for auditors and 10 for library in-charge posts. Besides, 25 candidates are also in the fray for senior executive committee and 39 for junior executive committee membeships.

But, most of the candidates are worried over use of money power in the election and they feel helpless with their limited resources. Many senior lawyers expressed their concern that use of money power had been affecting the bar election badly for the last 10 years and they demanded stern action against the guilty.

They also appreciated the decision of the ROs who recently suspended 17 candidates for not following the laid-down norms.

However, today the ROs  withdrew the same after holding a meeting with the alleged candidates by issuing a warning. Candidates were told that action would be initiated to remove the banners and posters of the candidates from the court complex and same should not be repeated by any candidate, otherwise strict action would be taken against the guilty.

It was agreed in principle by all the candidates, said one of the member of the returning officer committee.  The bar election will witness multi-cornered contest for the post of President.
