The experts in the vegetable mandi are surprised over the hike in potato prices during the season when they were supposed to come down. According to them, the price hike has been due to a large and sudden shortfall in the arrival of  vegetables at the wholesale from the Maharshtra. There has been information  that the potato crop in Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Karantaka, and eastern UP  has been badly hit, which has resulted in almost nil supply in last few days.
The potato in the city is only arriving from Ambikapur, Chattisgarh, Moradabad, Rampur and Uttarnachal. The shortfall in demand and supply has resulted in the price hike of potato.

Today only four trucks of potatoes arrived in the Dubagga mandi against the normal arrival of 14 to 30 trucks per day.

But, the price rise of other vegetables like Brinjal gourd, cabbage, bitter gourd, spinach and a marginal  increase has  alarmed authorities. They feel it is unjustified. Aslam a wholeseller in Dubagga mandi warns against a retailer driven artificial price hike. I can understand the hike in the prices of potatoes but why the prices of other veggies have shot up is beyond my mind.
