Reservation rules extended to pvt technical institutes

NEXT ACADEMIC session onwards (2006-07), all private - non-aided and aided – technical institutes in the State will have seats reserved for the backward class categories.

The state Technical Education Department has already framed rules in this respect and sent it across to the Professional Education Board (PEB) to be included into the PEPT (pre-engineering/pharmacy/architecture exams) rules. The dates of the PEPT-2006 would be most likely announced by April 15.

The reservation would be only vertical – as is in vogue at the autonomous and self-financing institutes under the various universities in the State. Which means that there will be 16 per cent reservation for Scheduled Caste candidates, 20 per cent for the Scheduled Tribe candidates and 14 per cent reservation for the OBC candidates.

There would be no horizontal reservations. The 30 per cent reservation for female candidates will be included in this broad reservation structure, meaning that within the respective reserved category seats, 30 per cent seats would be reserved for females of that category. Three per cent seats would be reserved for handicapped students.

Talking to the Hindustan Times, director of Technical Education Dr S K Paranjape said reservation rules have been framed as per the directives of the Union HRD Ministry and forwarded to the PEB for inclusion into the PEPT rules.

In another major rule change that would affect the Architecture course aspirants, the students wanting to seek admission to the private architecture colleges in the State would have to clear an aptitude test to be conducted by the Indian Council of Architecture.

However, students who wish to seek admission to the lone Government architecture college at Gwalior will not require to clear this aptitude test. Also the Indian Council of Architecture has done away with mandatory clearing of English subject.

The Directorate of Technical Education has also fixed the seat quota for the state, all India and other categories for the different types of institutes. As per the new rules, the private engineering colleges would have 65 per cent MP quota, 15 per cent management quota and 20 per cent All India quota.

The aided autonomous private institutes will have 90 per cent State quota, five per cent all India quota and five per cent NRI quota, the autonomous polytechnics will have 95 per cent State quota and five per cent NRI quota while the autonomous self-financing institutes (like the UITs) will have 75 per cent MP quota, five per cent NRI quota and 20 per cent all India quota.
