Speaking on the occasion, the minister said increasing UP’s literacy rate was the top priority for the State Government.
On the MoU, the minister said, “First, there is no dearth of resources with the government and second, to say that this is a step towards privatizing education is a wrong notion. The adopting agency will do the monitoring job.”
He said even of over 50 years of Independence, about 43 per cent of the State’s population was illiterate. Singh said, “After the SP came to power, there has been a phenomenal decrease in the teacher-taught ratio. From 1:70, the government has brought it down to 1:52. Still it is far away from the ideal 1:42 ratio. We’re committed to touch that figure.”Addressing the gathering, secretary (basic education0 JS Deepak said, “This new scheme aims at strengthening public-private partnership for the cause of making the State fully literate. The MoU will address the major area of cooperation/activities necessary to fully implement the objectives of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. It also envisages support to the Parshidiya Primary and Upper Primary Schools situated all over the State.”
On the occasion, Rotary International felicitated four persons with Vocational Excellency award. Those honoured were advocate-general Virendra Bhatia, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, cricketer Mohd Kaif and Bobby Ramakant for promoting anti-tobacco drive.
