They are protesting against the delay made by the State government in fulfilling their six-point demand. Angry over the false assurances given by the government during their agitation in July 2005, the district nurses association has also threatened to go on an indefinite state-wide strike in the last week of March. The nurses have also decided to stage a dharna at the State Health Directorate on April 10 in support of their main demand of making fresh recruitment of staff nurses in the district hospitals.

Meanwhile, due to the nurses agitation the junior doctors, patients and their attendants had to face a lot of inconvenience. The patients had to request pharmacists to change IV Fluid and get drugs from the medicine store. Some panicky attendants, when came to know that the nurses agitation will continue for the next few days, decided to shift to private hospitals. In the absence of nurses some very serious patients and accidents victims who arrived in the late afternoon were also referred to the other hospitals. The work also remained partially affected at the Colvin, Beli, Dufferin and SN Children Hospital.

The SRN Hospital administration directed 22 pharmacists to provide emergency drugs and injections to the patients. The trainee pharmacists, senior and junior residents and some matrons were also put on a special duty.

SRN Hospital Superintendent-In-Charge Dr NBL Srivastava said for the convenience of patients the pharmacists and trainee pharmacists have been asked to take care of patients. But still with such a heavy load of patients at the SRN Hospital, we may face difficulty in providing adequate care and treatment to all the patients.

"It is a state-wide agitation and that is why we are unable to do anything. Still a letter has been written to the MLN Medical College Principal requesting him to raise the problem at the high level," he added.

Meanwhile, a meeting of nurses association was conducted at the Nursing School to discuss future course of action.

Addressing the meeting district nurse association president Safia Khatun said during their state-wide agitation in July 2005 the government had assured to issue GO in context of their six-point demand which also included promotion and fresh recruitment of nurses in the state. But till date not even a single GO has been issued by the government to fulfill our demand. There is still crisis of nurses in the state and many nurses have not been given promotion from the last 20 years. The association had demanded to pay Rs 1500 every year for the maintenance of uniform. We had also asked to provide Rs 1200 every month as washing allowance. But none of our demands have been fulfilled, she added.

"With the present strength of nurses at SRN Hospital we can do only eight hour morning shift at the hospital," she said.
The members of State Employees Joint Council have also supported the strike.
