Favouring revitalization of its ties with India, Syria has sought strategic cooperation with the country, particularly in the field of energy, chemicals and railways.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Mouallem sought enhanced investment and trade between the two countries as he noted that there was a lot of scope for partnership between them.
"We must restore our deep relations," Al-Mouallem said in New Delhi before winding up his three-day visit on Wednesday .
Pointing out that Syria was focusing on 'Look East' policy, he said his country was seeking enhanced relations, particularly in trade and economic fields, as "the world is not only the West".
His comments assume significance considering that the US had more than a year ago asked India not to pursue economic cooperation with Syria. The US had cited a UN resolution to press its suggestion.
During his stay here, Al-Mouallem met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and held talks with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Commerce Minister Kamal Nath and Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Ramvilas Paswan.
"All of them are keen to establish partnership with Syria in all domains," Al-Mouallem said, adding his country was ready for it.
