Three more polio cases detected

THINGS HAVE become increasingly uncomfortable for the Health Department with reports of three fresh cases of wild and vaccine-induced polio virus in Allahabad and Kaushambi districts during the past 24 hours. With these fresh cases, the total number of polio cases has reached four in Allahabad division.

According to reports, about two-year-old Puja, daughter of Sheshmani, tested positive for wild polio virus. A resident of Purabhani near Basant Bazar Handia, Puja suffered from paralytic attack in the first week of September. Her stool samples were sent to Lucknow and Delhi, where the reports confirmed the presence of wild polio virus. Her stool samples were again sent to Mumbai for reconfirmation of the earlier reports.

Similarly, about four-month-old Piyush, son of Shyam Babu, has also tested positive for vaccine-induced polio virus. A resident of Nai Basti Kydganj, Piyush has become crippled due to the virus. Four-year-old Neetu, daughter of Jai Singh Patel of Peepal Gaon Jhalwa in Chail, also reported with polio-like symptoms in the first week of September. Later, she tested positive for polio.

"Neetu's stool samples were collected on September 14 and 15 and were sent to Delhi. The initial reports confirmed the presence of polio virus. The samples of Puja and Neetu have again been sent to Mumbai for the reconfirmation of the wild polio virus. However, the stool test of Mohd John, a resident of Kareli, confirmed the presence of polio virus," said Dr Kalim Akmal, district polio immunisation officer. Dr Akmal said Piyush in Kydganj, was found suffering from the vaccine-induced polio virus. Normally, one or two in every one thousand children suffer from vaccine-induced polio virus. "This is confirmed through various tests. Unfortunately, with these cases, the total number of polio cases in UP have shot up to 337," he added.
