Women ‘looted’ vegetables at the Sabzi Mandi during the two-hour relaxation of curfew in Khargone on Sunday.
The residents claimed that the relaxation, which was granted only to women and children, was very short, which led to chaos among the residents.
Dissent brewed among residents over supply of necessary goods and services by the administration.
According to eyewitnesses in the Sabzi Mandi, as soon the curfew relaxation information spread in the area, women reached the mandi and started to flee with sacks of potatoes and onions.
Police rushed to spot and tried to contain the situation but the women had already opened all sacks in the mandi.
“How can anyone live without water, vegetables and milk? It is the responsibility of the administration to provide us with the goods for our daily needs, but they have failed. I request and demand administration to increase the relaxation period,” Savita Mahajan, a resident, told HT.
Further, residents said that the information of curfew relaxation was not given to them by the administration.
“Many people were not aware of the relaxation and are suffering due to the lack of necessary goods,” said Faheem Ahmed, another resident.
“We are making all attempts to make things normal and extra police forces have been deployed. The sensitive areas are closely watched in the city,” said SP Amit Singh to HT.
Meanwhile, the Baroda state highway, which was closed due to communal clashes, was opened on Sunday. The police are keeping an eye on all the petrol pumps of the city and have warned owners not to sell petrol till the orders of the administration.
