Royal Challengers Bangalore were bundled out for 49, the lowest total in the history of Indian Premier League, against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 23. On this day four years ago, RCB had notched up the highest-ever Twenty20 score.

Before the start of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders, April 23 was a happy date for Virat Kohli’s team. After the end of Sunday’s Indian Premier League match at Eden Gardens, April 23 will now also evoke nightmare memories.

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s total of 49 in just 9.4 overs is the lowest total in the history of IPL, beating the previous mark of 58 by Rajasthan Royals, which was against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2009 Indian Premier League match in Cape Town, South Africa.

High to low

That it happened on April 23, 2017, would make this even more disappointing for on this very day in 2013, there were plenty of records broken.

On April 23, 2013, Royal Challengers Bangalore played Pune Warriors at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. It was the day Chris Gayle went ballistic as he blasted 175 off 66 balls. He notched up his century in just 30 balls and the knock included 13 fours and 17 sixes as Royal Challengers Bangalore notched up 263/5.

Gayle’s score of 175 was the highest in T20 history, the total of 17 sixes the most hit by a batsman in a Twenty20 innings. Gayle also smashed the fastest 100 in limited-overs cricket by reaching the landmark in 30 balls while Royal Challengers Bangalore’s total of 263/5 remains the highest score by a team in Twenty20s.

On April 23 2013, Royal Challengers Bangalore held the record for the highest team total in IPL history. On April 23, 2017, the tables have turned and Royal Challengers Bangalore now hold the record for the lowest total ever.
