A traffic constable at Kandivli demanded Rs 200 from an autorickshaw driver to return his vehicle documents seized for jumping signal. But the driver, too, was so determined that he approached the anti-corruption bureau instead and got the policeman arrested.

When it comes to asking for bribe, no amount is too less, it seems.

A traffic constable at Kandivli demanded Rs 200 from an autorickshaw driver to return his vehicle documents seized for jumping signal. But the driver, too, was so determined that he approached the anti-corruption bureau instead and got the policeman arrested.

According to the ACB, the driver was stopped at Kandivli (West) on Sunday, after he jumped a signal.

“Police constable Nandkumar Bankar, 52, from the Kandivli traffic outpost asked him to show his vehicle documents and asked him to pay Rs 50 for jumping signal,” said an ACB officer, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

On checking the documents, Bankar realised the insurance policy for the vehicle wasn’t renewed. So he seized the original voter identity card of the driver and a photocopy of his Aadhaar card.

“The driver was allowed to leave, but was asked to get Rs 300 to get his seized documents back,” said the officer.

When the driver went to meet Bankar on Tuesday, on ACB’s advice, he lowered the amount to Rs 200 and asked him to give it to one Kalpesh Kamble, 24, who drives a towing van at Kandivli.

The ACB sleuths caught Kamble while accepting the bribe. Subsequently, Bankar, too, was arrested.

The incident has also highlighted the unholy nexus between traffic policemen and towing van vehicles.
