In his deposition, Ramprasad claimed that he rushed to Versova after he saw the news of his brother’s death on TV channels.

“My friend Ganesh Iyer, an advocate, and I rushed to Versova police station. When we asked a constable if there had been an encounter, he told us he had no idea and to go the Nana-Nani Park,” said Ramprasad.

Ramprasad told the court that the spot of the alleged fake encounter was deserted.

“We were walking when we spotted blood near an electric pole. There was a newspaper and a few stones lying on it,” he said.

Ramprasad said three officers were standing near a police jeep further ahead.

“We asked them if there had been an encounter, and they laughed and denied it.”

However, Rambabu Lodh, the watchman of a building, told Ramprasad that the men in a police car had come there and dumped the body of a man.

In his deposition, Ramprasad said that on the day of the encounter Shyam Sundar had received news from one Dheeraj Mehta that Lakhan Bhaiya and Anil Bheda had been picked up by police from Vashi.

“Dheeraj said the officers were from the Belapur crime branch and one of them was assistant inspector Prakash Bhandari. We learnt that Bhandari was on leave,” he said.

He also told the court that he had sent telegrams to Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai commissioner of police and the then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and home minister RR Patil asking for help.
