According to the police, the woman was pursuing her third year of graduation at VMLG College and was being tutored in English by Atul Yadav, 25, who ran a coaching centre in her locality.

“In her suicide note, she named her tutor responsible for her step. We have arrested the accused based on a complaint filed by her family. The accused told us that the woman was in a relationship with him and she was pressing him for marriage. However, he refused to marry her as he was already married — he got married two years ago,” said Neeraj Kumar Singh, station house officer, Kavi Nagar police station.

The woman was found hanging from a dupatta tied to the ceiling fan. Her father was away at work and her mother had gone to pick up her two brothers from school. When her mother returned, she found the woman’s body hanging and informed her husband and the police.

The police said they booked Yadav under Section 306 (abetting suicide) of the IPC and provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“The biggest reason for death is Atul... and rest of you please forgive me. It is better to end my misery in a day rather than suffering daily and this way I will go away from Atul. It is Aul who is the reason for my death and no one else,” the young woman’s note read.

Yadav hails from Sikanderabad in Bulandshahr district and was staying with his maternal uncle in the locality. The police said the family of the woman levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Yadav. However, Yadav in his statement to the police said despite the woman knowing that he was married, she still continued to be a relationship with him.
