Rio 2016: PV Sindhu beats world No 2 to reach semifinal

The 21-year-old Indian is a win away from assuring India of a medal in badminton; Usain Bolt cruises into 200m semifinals.

Two-time World Championship bronze medallist PV Sindhu stood just a win away from assuring India of an elusive medal after she stunned London Games silver medallist Wang Yihan of China to enter the women’s singles semifinals at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old Indian, who came into the match with a 2-4 head-to-head record, dished out a compact game to outmanoeuvre the more experienced Wang 22-20, 21-19 in a gruelling battle lasting 54 minutes.

Sindhu will face world No 6 Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the last-four stage. Okuhara defeated compatriot Akane Yamaguchi 11-21, 21-17, 21-10 in a hard-fought quarterfinal clash which dragged on for one hour and eight minutes.

Earlier, India’s Hardeep Singh lost to Turkey’s Cenk Ildem in the pre-quarterfinal of the men’s 98kg Greco-Roman wrestling.

Usain Bolt, aiming for a historic triple of the 100m, 200m and 4x100m in three successive Olympics, ran an almost casual run, making sure he topped heat 9 in 20.28 seconds to qualify for the 200m semifinals.

6:33 AM (IST): World Champion Dafne Schippers sails into the final of 200m sprint with a timing of 21.96 seconds. 100m Olympic champion Elaine Thompson was second in the semifinal.

4:48 AM (IST): PV Sindhu will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Yamaguchi Akane and Okuhara Nozomi. The Japanese shutters in action right now.
