The city police on Friday arrested the accused in connection with the acid attack on a 26-year-old contractual teacher at the local government elementary school almost five weeks after the incident took place on July 15.

The accused has been identified as Paramjit Singh, 39, a resident of Kheda Dona village near Sultanpur Lodhi. He was allegedly pressuring the victim to marry him despite the fact he was already married and had two children as well.

The victim, a resident of Talwandi Mehma village near Kaputhala town, was going to her school on her scooter on July 15 morning when Paramjeet, her former colleague, came on a bike and threw acid on her and fled.
The victim suffered burn injuries on her face and other body parts. She sustained 40 per cent burns and was admitted to the Kapurthala civil hospital.

The victim and Paramjit were employed under 'Padho Punjab', a programme run under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) a few years ago in Kapurthala district.

Then she got a job as an inclusive education (IE) volunteer under SSA while the accused was rendered unemployed.

A few months before the incident, the victim had filed a written complaint with the police against the accused for harassing her.

Acting upon the complaint, the police called the accused and his family and both the parties struck a compromise after the accused apologised for his behaviour.

The victim was working at Government Elementary School, Topkhana, here.

ASI Jasbir Singh, the investigation officer in the case, said they carried several raids at the accused's house and other nearby localities to nab him.

"He was out of state and when we got a tip-off today that he was in Kapurthala, the police immediately nabbed him", he said.

The police had registered a case under sections 326-A, 307 and 341 of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
