Jarkhar sports academy to mark Dhyan Chand’s 193rd birthday

Mata Sahib Kaur, Jarkhar Sports Academy is all geared up to celebrate Dhyan Chand’s 109th birthday, a legendary figure in the world of hockey who earned three Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

The academy has already dedicated a statue to the hockey legend which was inaugurated by another legendary figure, Flying Sikh Milkha Singh along with Ashok Chand (Dhyan Chand’s son) during the Jarkhar Sports Festival early this year in January.

In a short span of six years, the sports academy has been actively involved in encouraging under-privileged talented youth in rural areas and has produced players of national repute.

Various dignitaries from sports fraternity from the district will also be present to celebrate Dhyan Chand’s birthday and a hockey tournament will be held to mark the day. It is pertinent to mention here that the national sports day is celebrated to commemorate the extraordinary contribution by the hockey legend to the sporting world.

The academy president Jagrup Singh Jarkhar, said, “To observe the national sports day to acknowledge and honor Dhyan Chand Ji on his birthday speaks volume about the legend’s tremendous contribution to the world of hockey”.

“We will be celebrating and recalling the legend’s extraordinary achievements in the sporting arena. The aim is to encourage the youth of the area and revive the same sporting spirit among them”.

District Sports Officer, Kartar Singh, District education officer, Paramjit Kaur Chahal, Punjab Basketball Association Secretary, Teja Singh Dhaliwal, Arjuna Award International Volleyball Players Sukhpal Singh Brar will also be present.
