Despite being one of the richest councils in the state, Mandi Gobindgarh has failed to provide clean drinking water to its residents as the water supply system in city has not been working for more than four years.

"We have never faced shortage of water, however, the water supplied to us is not fit for drinking" said Raj Kumar, a resident of ward 20, Mandi Gobindgarh.

In some places, including ward number 20, the situation has worsened to such an extent that sometimes even insects are detected in water.

The council, which has budget of more than `50 crore for town, is unable to provide clean drinking water to people.

The town has four water tanks which were built in 1976 under the integrated development scheme. However, none of them is functional now. These tanks are capable to supply adequate amount of potable water to town as the tank in the municipal council premises has capacity of 50 lakh gallon. The tank near the bus stand has capacity of 2 lakh gallon and the other two tanks at tube well and Prem Nagar have capacity of one lakh gallon each. These four tanks can supply more than four lakh gallon water every day which is enough for 75,000 people of the town. However, these water tanks are not working for past four years.

Sub-divisional officer (SDO) of MC, RK Sood said due to lack of equipment these tanks are not working. "For this, we need dedicated tube wells and more than 70 operators. However, the department has only 30 operators today," said he.

Council chief Poonam Jindal told Hindustan times, "Our first priority is to provide all basic amenities to residents and I personally would make sure that each and every resident gets potable water. We would make water tanks functional again and talk with authorities to change water pipeline of city."

Harjinder Singh Raju, councilor of ward number 25, said, "It is a mystery for people. They do not know whether generators work or not. This problem cannot be ignored. We would raise the issue in next meeting of the council."
