Over 3.5 lakh metric tonnes of paddy has been purchased in Tarn Taran till date at 58 grain markets of the district, disclosed by deputy commissioner Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal on Wednesday.

After visiting the various grain markets and reviewing the purchase of the crop, Dhaliwal said of the total, 3,04,666 tonnes was procured by the government food agencies and the remaining 46,975 by private traders.
“PunGrain procured 91,788 metric tonnes, Markfed 58,158 metric tonnes, Punsup 62,024 metric tonnes, Punjab Warehouse Corporation 21,249 metric metric tonnes, Punjab Agro 16,102 metric tonnes and Food Corporation of India (FCI) procured 8370 metric tonnes. For the purchase, the government had delivered 80 percent payments to the farmers and remaining amount will also been paid soon,” he said.
He added, “Lifting of procured crop is going on and till date 70 percent crop had been lifted. Officials of procurement agencies have been asked to procure the crop without any delay. Adequate arrangements have also been made for convenience of farmers in the markets.”
He appealed the farmers to bring the moisture-free crops so that the procurement agencies didn’t face any difficulty.
Issuing warning to those who reap the crops with the combine harvesters at night, to be ready for strict action, he said, “The combine harvester will be taken into its possession by the police if any person is caught violating the directions in this regard.”
